Simple Steps to Protect Yourself and Your Belongings at the YMCA
Winter is one of the most active times of year at our YMCA locations. With more members visiting our facilities and parking lots, we also see an increase in thefts during these colder months. While the YMCA works closely with law enforcement and takes steps to reduce these risks, member awareness and quick action play a big role in preventing crime.
Below are practical ways you can help keep yourself and your belongings safe—both in the parking lot and inside the facility.
Why Thefts Increase in Winter
As our facilities get busier, parking lots become a prime target for criminals who look for vehicles with valuables visible inside. Criminals target gyms because people tend to leave their valuables in their car instead of taking them inside. Many thieves move quickly and use tools to break windows. Most of the incidents we see happen because items like wallets, purses, and phones were left in plain sight.
Being proactive is the best way to minimize the chance of becoming a victim.
Parking Lot Safety: Protect Your Vehicle and Valuables
1. Always Lock Your Vehicle
It seems simple, but it’s one of the most effective steps. Lock your doors every time you enter the facility.
2. Never Leave Valuables Visible
Items such as phones, wallets, purses, and bags should never be left on seats or in open consoles. These are the most common triggers for break‑ins.
3. If You Must Leave Items in Your Car, Hide Them
Place belongings in the glove box, center console, or under a seat before you arrive at the Y. Even locked cars can be targeted if valuables are visible.
Inside the Facility: Keep Your Items Secure
Use Day‑Use Lockers
All members and guests can use our day‑use lockers. Please bring your own lock or purchase one at the front desk.
Avoid Leaving Items Unsecured
Do not leave valuables on benches, on top of lockers, or anywhere visible. Quick thefts often happen when people assume, “I’ll be right back.”
If Theft Occurs: What to Do Immediately
Report It Right Away
If you are a victim of a theft, notify YMCA staff and law enforcement immediately. Quick reporting increases the chances of identifying patterns and preventing additional incidents.
Cancel Credit and Debit Cards
Many times, thieves use stolen cards to purchase gift cards within minutes. Call your bank at the first sign of trouble.
Help Us Keep Our Community Safe
If you notice anything suspicious—unusual behavior, someone looking into multiple vehicles, or any activity that doesn’t feel right—report it to a YMCA staff member. We work with local law enforcement and a network of fitness centers to stay ahead of these crimes and maintain a safe environment for everyone.
Thank You for Your Support
