March is Brain Injury Awareness Month! This is a great time to raise awareness of Brain Injuries with spring season sports right around the corner. According to the Brain Injury Association of America, each year an estimated 2.5 million children and adults in the United States sustain a traumatic brain injury (TBI), and another 795,000 individuals sustain an acquired brain injury (ABI) from nontraumatic causes. TBIs can affect the functionality of the brain—affecting thinking, reasoning, and memory. Whether the victim is an adult, a child, or an infant, TBIs can have a major impact on individuals and their families.
Brain Injury is a very significant focus for Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services (STARS). STARS has been awarded an accreditation for our Brain Injury Program for both adults, adolescents, and children by the Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF). CARF Accreditation is the public seal of trust and commitment to quality. Essentially, CARF ensures that patients receive the best care possible in the most effective and efficient manner.
The Saint Alphonsus Health System/ Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services (STARS) continuum of care is the only system of care in the Intermountain West that provides a complete continuum of care for people recovering from concussions and more severe brain injuries. Saint Alphonsus is the only Level 2 Trauma Hospital in the Treasure Valley region. The Brain Injury Program at STARS provides comprehensive/ interdisciplinary rehabilitation services to people who have sustained brain injury.
Our system of care promotes the highest quality of care and supports the involvement of health care providers throughout the continuum. Additionally, Saint Alphonsus Health System/Saint Alphonsus Rehabilitation Services (STARS) is networked with many local and statewide resources to facilitate patients’ transition to their home communities.
